NEO Flair: It was close between the Kompresso and the Flair NEO, and I appreciate that the Flair comes with so many add ons, like a pressure gauge to measure how hard you’re pressing. Also, the filter is not very precise and I found a lot of grounds in my coffee. Bialetti Moka Pot: The Bialetti is a classic, but machines that use steam pressure tend to produce harsh-tasting espresso because of the temperature of the water. This is still a great option for someone who wants an all-in-one espresso experience (but we do think that that, for about $150 more, the Barista Express Impress is worth it). Breville Barista Pro: I loved working with the Breville Barista Express, but it boasts a number of features I found unnecessary for everyday use and preferred using my own grinder versus the built-in grinder on the machine.Serious Eats / Ashley Rodriguez The Competition Instead of a general “citrus acidity,” with the Gaggia, I was able to get really specific notes, like orange with a sweetness like milk chocolate from the blended coffee, and cherry and candy sweetness from the Guatemalan one. There was also a level of nuance I couldn’t find in other espressos. Most of the machines were able to achieve some level of balance and acidity, but this is the only espresso in which I managed get sweetness out of the coffee. Did it produce the best espresso we had on any of these machines? Yes. ![]() To get the water to the temperature I wanted, I waited until the machine was fully heated (which is indicated by the second light on the three-button interface turning off), purged water until the light came back on, and then waited 30 seconds. The Gaggia has a single boiler and tends to run hot the very first shot of espresso I pulled was really bitter and strange. What we didn’t like: We talked about temperature surfing earlier-and this is a machine that needs it. But when the pressure moves above nine bars, the water starts to compact the coffee grounds in the puck, which slows down the rate at which the water flows through the puck, and the flavor of the espresso is consequently worse. Most tasters will find that the flavor of the espresso gets better with each shot up until you reach nine bars, because as the pressure goes up, the water passes through the tamped coffee grounds in the espresso puck faster and faster. This is because, as 2007 World Barista Champion James Hoffmann recently explained, nine bars is the optimal pressure for espresso, a fact that can be demonstrated by simply pulling a series of shots, starting at three bars of pressure and gradually increasing the amount of pressure with each shot. ![]() If you ever have a chance to check out a commercial espresso machine at a coffee shop, nine times out of ten those machines are set to exert pressure at nine bars. One of the features we paid close attention to is pressure, since the amount of pressure with which water is passed through coffee grounds is an essential part of the process of making espresso if you’re not incorporating pressure into your brewing, you’re essentially just making strong drip coffee. ![]() ![]() If this affected save data in anyway it would ruin the game, but thankfully that doesn’t happen. It acts like it’s loading for several seconds and then just dies. First, while running on WP8, the game often crashes when returning to the map screen after a level. IBomber Defense may be polished on other platforms, but the Windows Phone port suffers from a few dings. ![]() This weird visual bug made things tough, but it only happened once. Repair reduces repair costs and makes turrets take less damage. The former causes you to start a map with more money and gain more from selling turrets. Upgrade points can also be spent on Buy and Repair stats. But the more towers that surround it, the stronger it gets (up to three levels). X-Weapon: The Axis’ special tower resembles a cannon with impressive range.Comms: The Allies’ unique tower boosts the range of nearby towers.Sabotage/Firestorm: Fires individual shots that slow enemy units.Thankfully the game displays a notification four waves before aerial enemies start appearing in a level, so you needn’t build them too early. AA: The anti-aircraft gun is the only tower that can attack planes, but useless against ground units.Cannon: Fires slow but powerful shots that do splash damage. You’ll usually want to build several of these before you earn enough money for more expensive armaments. Machine Gun: The standard low-cost, rapid-fire weapon.Towers can be built and upgraded while paused. ![]() All towers can be upgraded up to three times mid-mission, provided you’ve unlocked the upgrades. Unlike geoDefense’s laser, there is no weapon that fires in a straight line. Initially, you’ll only have access to three towers, but by spending upgrade points you’ll unlock more. The same tower looks slightly different depending on which side uses it, adding just a hint of variety. Towers and upgradesĮach side has access to some of the same towers and one unique one. The buttons are too tiny, even on the Lumia 920’s 4.5 inch screen, so you’re bound to press the wrong one occasionally. Fast-forward works the same as in Flight Control, speeding up the game. Rewind allows you to restart the current wave, but sadly it can only be used once every three waves. Frankly, the zoomed out view is the only useful distance and should be the default.Ī control panel at the top-right corner of the screen has four options: Rewind, Pause, Fast-Forward, and Settings. The default view is zoomed in much too close. The maps are too large to fit everything on screen at once some panning is required. ![]() Towers can only be built in certain spaces, and putting them on higher ground increases their range. Either way, enemies approach along specific routes. The goal in sea levels is to prevent enemy ships from moving off-screen. On the land maps, you have a specific base that must be defended. Maps come in two varieties: land and sea-based. ![]() ![]() ![]() Probably not the case for anything you find during a battle though. I had a sword vanish after being tossed out of bounds and yet I still had it when the battle ended. Also weapons you bring that get “lost” in battle don’t stay lost thankfully. Also when you confine objects in battle, seemingly if the summon expires, you got to keep that item. ![]() ![]() Items (like seemingly any as mentioned) can be equipped and brought into battle. It’s hard to know what are the best ones to go with so you just have to use your gut to figure out when to keep your choices and buy the thing you’re offered. It’s a bit cluttered, ain’t it? (Phantom Brave)Īn interesting bit is how when buying items or creating new characters, the stats and whatnot are always randomized every time you speak with Marona in the main hub. Characters can also equip items found in battle (this includes trees… huh) and can use different attacks. Also, any confined character can only be in battle for a certain amount of turns before they can’t be used at all anymore in battle (Ash has 5 turns for example). Each object will grant different stat buffs or debuffs (rocks give a nice boost in defense but decreases speed for example). This includes, rocks, trees, sticks, Spike weapons, etc. But wait, there’s more! See, Marona is a key element in combat, for she gets to, funny enough, play Pokémon Trainer and summon Ash (and 3 free characters to begin with when you start) by “confining” them to objects scattered in the stage. See, where as Disgaea is your classic grid-based tactical RPG, Phantom Brave ditches the grid. ![]() If you’ve played Disgaea, while it’s not 1:1, it does share a lot of similarities in visuals and gameplay. Problem is, the girl is “possessed” of sorts and despite her being the sweetest bean, is loathed by everyone she comes across because of it, so sadly all she has is Ash, who is somehow only able to be seen by her (but can be heard by anyone if he speaks aloud). The story is basically a buddy-adventure with Ash and Marona living on an island for numerous years trying to make ends meet. After this, he spends his days looking after Marona who plays a vital role in the story. This is a tale about a boy named Ash (who’s not out to be the best like no-one ever was… couldn’t resist) who died but sort of in battle and thanks to the father of the little girl Marona, he was made into a phantom instead of outright dying. Anyway, nitpicking aside, let’s talk first about Phantom Brave. It’s funny that this is called Volume 1 when in reality we already before got what should’ve been volume 1 the Prinny 2-pack ( review). Anyway, how do both of these fare on Switch? Let’s find out!ĮEEEEK… we’re all blurry! (Phantom Brave) Also note both can’t be bought separately on the eShop, it’s all in one icon on the home menu. In fact, Phantom Brave even got a Wii port back in 2009 as Phantom Brave: We Meet Again (get it?). The first pack here has Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle Remastered and Soul Nomad & the World Eaters, both originating from the PlayStation 2. Anyway, this is the first of a new line of Switch-specific 2-packs of classic Nippon Ichi Software games from the past, now ported to Switch and bar the PC versions are in “HD” for the first time here. This one’s a bit late and for good reason but I’ll get to that later. Sure, the creature design are old and bears witness to being made in 1989, but I am sure that back then they were pretty impressive. "The Terror Within" is a creature feature, and luckily we do get to see a lot of the creature that is stalking the characters in the subterranean complex. While he fared well enough in "The Terror Within", he did feel a bit out of his element in this type of movie. As for the cast in the movie, then I was only familiar with George Kennedy, and it was sort of odd to see him in a movie such as this. However, the movie was sort of dystopian future in its setting, and it actually worked out well enough. It is a storyline that is a lot akin to the story told in the "Alien" movie, like it or not. The storyline is pretty straight forward and very easy to follow. It is watchable and enjoyable enough for the cheesy movie that it is. But I will say that "The Terror Within" is not a bad movie, as there are far worse movies of this type out there. And while "The Terror Within" wasn't an overly impressive or outstanding movie, it was at least better than its sequel in many ways. I had already seen the 1991 sequel "The Terror Within II" and wasn't impressed with that, but still I managed to sit down to watch this first movie as I hadn't already seen it. Well, I had a chance to sit down in 2020 to watch the 1989 movie "The Terror Within" for the first time. ![]() |
